Cities unite for energy and climate action: New integrated Covenant of Mayors launch
The Covenant of Mayors - a movement of European cities committed to more energy efficiency and renewable energy - and its sister initiative Mayors Adapt – cities committing to prepare for the impacts of climate change - have joined forces in the fight against climate change.
On 15 October, Miguel Arias Cañete, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, hosted a ceremony at the European Parliament in Brussels to acknowledge the important contribution cities make to reducing emissions, decarbonising energy systems and creating climate-resilient urban environments for citizens.
European cities - home to 360 million people or 72% of Europe's population - account for 70% of the continent's energy consumption. These areas are also particularly vulnerable to the unavoidable impacts of climate change, which makes urban spaces a top target for climate and energy action. They are the ideal place for boosting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency in buildings and increasing green areas, and thereby mitigating and adapting to climate change.
The Covenant of Mayors and Mayors Adapt initiatives are movements involving more than 6000 cities voluntarily committing to take climate action. From now on, the new Covenant of Mayors will integrate Mayors Adapt and include the solutions put in place by cities to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.
The new Covenant will help cities develop synergies between mitigation and adaptation. At the event, signatory municipalities discussed carbon dioxide emissions targets for 2030, as well as adaptation efforts cities undertake to combat the unavoidable adverse effects of climate change.
The initiative is part of the EU's Energy Union priority of reducing emissions while moderating energy demand and investing in renewable energies and energy efficiency. The new initiative will also contribute to make Europe more climate-resilient, in line with the EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change. Launched just weeks before the 2015 United Nations climate summit in Paris, the new Covenant will also have a strengthened international dimension and aims to inspire similar initiatives in other parts of the world.
